About Michigan

Michigan

Michigan is in the upper Midwest and the heart of the Great Lakes region. It has many attractions, famous landmarks, and scenic state and national parks and forests. In addition to the “great ones”, it has about 12,000 inland lakes, 38 deep-water ports, more miles of coastline than any state but Alaska, and more lighthouses than any other U.S. state. Its agriculture features tourist-friendly fare such as cherries, blueberries, peaches, apples, and wine. And its cities include a major metropolis, some university towns, and countless rustic villages. The state is geographically unique, being comprised of two major peninsulas, and it can be further divided into five distinct areas. They are the Upper Peninsula, (known to Michiganders as "The U.P."), Northern Michigan (Big Rapids and Northwards), Western Michigan (along the sandy coast of Lake Michigan), Central Michigan or "Mid-Michigan" and the Southeast or "Downstate".

The Lower Peninsula has the majority of the population (primarily in the south), while the Upper Peninsula, separated by Lake Michigan and a bit of Lake Huron, is mostly rural. Until 1957, the only way to drive from one to the other was to go all the way around Lake Michigan, or take your car onto a ferry. Michigan's economy was previously dominated by the auto industry, but has diversified somewhat as that and other traditional manufacturing industries have moved their facilities elsewhere, and it's beginning to attract more information technology, life sciences, and high-tech manufacturing jobs. Tourism is a growing segment of the economy, focusing in winter on activities in the snow, and in summer on the State's extensive beaches, lakes, and rivers. Hunting, fishing, and sailing are also popular outdoor activities

400 Feet on Lake Fanny Hooe in Copper Harbor! 15624 East Gate Ln MLS# 1106467

Copper Harbor, Keweenaw County, Michigan

Price Reduced! Upper Michigan Waterfront Home for Sale Where US-41 Ends! This beautiful waterfront home is located within the Norland Copper Harbor Sun and Beach Club, in Grant Township at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Keweenaw County, the northernmost county in Michigan. The property offered for sale has 400 Feet of frontage on beautiful Lake Fanny Hooe near Copper Harbor. 70% of the shoreline of this lake is part of Fort Wilkins State Park, and less than a dozen homes can ever be built on the remaining shoreline lots. The lake view from the home will never change! This is a designated trout lake which is 230-Acres in size and has depths of up to 40-Feet. Fish species present include trout and walleyes. The lake was named for Lucy Frances Fitzhugh (Fannie) Hooe, the sister of Richardetta Hooe Ruggles, who was the wife of Maine native Lieutenant Daniel Ruggles, West Point graduate and Mexican War hero - who served at Fort Wilkins. The geological formations in this county are among the earth's oldest, and for thousands of years an ancient, unknown people mined the rich copper deposits here. The U.S. Government purchased the peninsula from the Chippewa (Ojibwa) in the Treaty of LaPointe in 1842. The government opened a Mineral Agency at Copper Harbor in 1843, and built Fort Wilkins the next year. By 1845 mining was in progress at Copper Harbor, Eagle River, and Eagle Harbor. By 1846 almost 1,000 mining permits had been issued. This early copper rush was over by 1847, and by the 1870s shipping "around the point" declined because of the opening of the Portage Lake Ship Canal further south between Houghton and Hancock. Today several of the former mining sites are popular tourist attractions. The property borders on US Highway 41, almost at its northern end. The southern end of this 2,000 mile highway is in Downtown Miami! A paved driveway slopes down into the property, goes to the garage, and then to the home. It is sheltered from Lake Superior winds and is complete with towering red and white pine. The forest floor has thimbleberries and blueberries to enjoy in July and August. The property offered for sale includes four surveyed lots and a Year-Round home overlooking the lake. The house was built into the natural hillside, and the 1056+ square foot home Main Floor plan includes a Living room, Dining area, Kitchen, three Bedrooms, and a Full Bath. On the 1056 square foot Lower Level there is a fourth non-conforming Bedroom, Mechanical area, Laundry area, second Bathroom, and lots of storage! An elevated deck surrounds three sides ot the home. The lake side has an 11x30 poured concrete patio area below the deck, and at the rear of the house is the end of the asphalt driveway. The home is located on two of the four lots, so a sale of the two undeveloped lots may be considered by a future owner. There are mail delivery post boxes available in Copper Harbor, 1.5 miles away. There is Internet direct access to Pasty.Net. No cell phone coverage is available, but WIFI is available in the Village. Quaint shops, restaurants, and other services are also available there. If you would like to see this home and the most lovely setting in the Keweenaw, schedule your private tour today! Seller is offering a $5,000.00 rebate at closing for updates.
