About Virginia

Virginia

The history of America is closely tied to that of Virginia, particularly during the Colonial period, Jamestown, founded in 1607, was the first permanent English settlement in North America and slavery was introduced there in 1619. The state is called the “Mother of Presidents” because eight U.S. presidents were born there.

The climate of Virginia becomes increasingly warmer and more humid farther south and east. Seasonal extremes vary from average lows of 26 °F (−3 °C) in January to average highs of 86 °F (30 °C) in July. The Atlantic ocean has a strong effect on eastern and southeastern coastal areas of the State.

Virginia is divided into 95 counties and 39 independent cities, which both operate the same way since independent cities are considered to be county-equivalent. This method of treating cities and counties equally is unique to Virginia.

Fairfax County is the most populous locality in Virginia, with over one million residents. Neighboring Loudon County is both the fastest-growing county in Virginia and has the highest median household income ($114,204) in the USA as of 2010.  Virginia's economy is balanced, with diverse sources of income, including government and military, farming, and business. Virginia has 4.1 million civilian workers, and one-third of the jobs are in the service sector. The unemployment rate was 6.3% as of April 2011. Technology became the state's highest-grossing export in 2006, surpassing its traditional top exports of coal and tobacco combined.

Agriculture occupies 24% of the land in Virginia. As of 2007, about 357,000 Virginian jobs were in agriculture, with over 47,000 farms, averaging 171 acres (0.27 sq. mi.; 0.69 km2), in a total farmland area of 8.1 million acres (12,656 sq. mi.; 32,780 km2).

Providing horsepower in the fields and transportation for goods and people, horses were the backbone of the first Virginia Colonies. Today, the role of horses has changed dramatically, yet horses are still a vital economic factor. Some 700 equine events are held in Virginia each year, attracting over 800,000 participants and spectators who spend more than $167 million at these events. The average Virginia horse owner spends $2,969 per horse yearly. Horse owners spend $505 million in annual expenses and support approximately 20,000 jobs statewide.

Waterfront Fantasy Fufilled on the York River!

Gloucester Point, Gloucester County, Virginia

From the moment you pass through the white gates to the private lane you’ll feel at home. Spectacular towering pines and mature oaks shelter the house, which nestles on four grassy acres. The land gently slopes to the private beach and dock (3.5-4’ MLW) and boatlift on the majestic York River. The water beckons, promising peaceful days fishing its bounty and exploring hidden coves. A bowl of hearty clam chowder or summertime shag dancing on Yorktown’s Riverwalk is only five minutes away by boat, or a short, 15-minute trip by car. The scenic Colonial Parkway, the longest national park in America, makes historic Williamsburg or Jamestown a delightful, stress-free drive away. The home ticks all the boxes for gracious, one-level living. Within its over 3,300 square feet of space lie four generous bedrooms and 3.5 baths, including a walkout lower level featuring a bright in-law or guest apartment with its own kitchen and private entrance. When the family gathers for holidays, or a crowd of friends for a party, traffic flows seamlessly from the tiled entrance foyer to the living and family room, leading to a sun porch and deck stretching the width of the home. You’ll appreciate the glow of stainless steel appliances against the warm wood cabinetry in your roomy, updated kitchen. An island, ample counter space, and an adjoining breakfast area mean plenty of room for sous-chefs, visitors, or a Christmas cookie assembly line. As in the luxurious master suite and dining room, the kitchen’s view of the sparkling river draws the eye. Many peaceful hours will be spent appreciating the expansive vista from the deck. Greet the day from your private sandy beach at sunrise, or enjoy a heron’s still reflection in your pond as he waits patiently for a sushi snack. Finish off a busy day by catching up with the family as you put your feet up on the porch, or putter around in the detached garage’s workspace. Relax and settle in; your waterfront fantasy is fulfilled!
